In a tank-type fast breeder reactor, a cylindrical barrier (24; 25; 27, 29) is positioned around each intermediate heat exchanger (7) to prevent main flow of coolant from the core directly contacting the intermediate heat exchanger (7) so that any thermal striping generated in the hot plenum (9) of the reactor is prevented from coming into direct contact with the intermediate heat exchanger (7). Thus, thermal fatigue of the structural members of the intermediate heat exchangers (7), during the normal operation of the reactor or transitional operation of the plant, e.g., when the reactor is scrammed, due to such thermal striping may be avoided.
