PURPOSE:To shorten a time to read a betting ticket by recognizing numbers exceeding a digit of hundreds, not recognizing the numbers at a digit of unit and tens and not recognizing the digit exceeding a prescribed mark when it exists by assuming the digit as the prescribed mark. CONSTITUTION:A reading part 24 reads the signal of a line sensor and stores it in a read data area 26 after applying binarization. An identification control part 25 segments read data, and recognizes characters one by one at a working area 27 and stores them in a data storage part 28. A main control part 20 reads out data and transmit is it to a center, and a refund amount is transmitted from the center and is displayed on a display part 29. At the time of recognizing an amount, firstly, the digit of hundreds is recognized, and the digits of the unit and tens are not recognized. After that, it is discriminated whether the digit of hundreds is the number or a mark (*), and when it is the number, the digit of thousands is recognized, and when it is the mark (*), the digit of thousands is assumed as the mark (*).
