PURPOSE:To obtain the subject friction material, containing a fiber substrate, filler, thermosetting resin and a specific amount of long columnar granulated graphite, having high abrasion resistance and capable of improving fading resistance without deteriorating friction coefficient. CONSTITUTION:A friction material containing a long columnar granulated graphite in an amount of 1-20wt.% based on the total friction material in a nonasbestos friction material for brake consisting of a fiber substrate (e.g., glass fiber preferably having 5-100mum fiber diameter and 0.1-3mm fiber length), a filler (e.g., natural scaly graphite) and a thermosetting resin (e.g., phenolic resin). Furthermore, the above-mentioned graphite preferably has 1-3mm diameter and 1-15mm length.
