PURPOSE:To obtain birch tar or a dermatic agent containing said tar, by treating raw oil of birch tar with hot water, thereby removing phenolic odor without lowering the antibacterial activity of the tar and suppressing the skin- irritation and corrosive action to the diseased part by the deodorization treatment. CONSTITUTION:Raw oil of birch tar having anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities is added to hot water to dissipate the characteristic sharp odor (phenolic odor) of the raw oil such as phenolic odor, creosote odor or wood vinegar odor and the treated oil is washed with hot water to remove burnt odor of wood vinegar remaining in hot water. The objective deodorized birch tar or a dermatic agent containing said tar can be produced by the process with simple operation at a low cost. The deodorized birch tar has an action to suppress the formation of melanin in addition to the above-mentioned activities, is lamost free from phenolic odor and has weak corrosive action and skin-irritation to the wounded part of the skin. Accordingly, the tar can be used as a dermatic agent for cosmetics, etc., in addition to the use as a liniment, anatriptic, plaster, etc.
