The appts. comprises an expandable drum (1) around which the fibre (2) is fitted, one or more frictioning plates (7) preventing the fibre from sliding in relation to the drum. A detector (6) is provided to detect the breakage in the fibre. The drum takes the form of a hose, the expansion of which is produced by internal excess press. The drum consists of one or more inner cones provided with tracks, and is axially displaceable in relation to wedges running in the tracks. Each frictioning plate comprises an elastic sheet fitted around the wedges, and an external elastic sheet locks the fibre against the drum or against the inner elastic sheet after being pressurised in an external press. chamber (4). Alternatively, detection can be by means of a light-sensitive device which reacts to alterations in the optical transmission of the fibre.
