The apparatus comprises an up-flow reactor in which, while maintaining a sludge blanket,the water to be purified can be contacted with one or moreagents bringing the dissolved and/or dispersed material intoa form in which it can be separated from the water; meansfor the discharge of the purified water from the apparatus;and an influent distributing system to be connected to acentral water supply system. The influent distributing systemincludes a plurality of tube members assembled to form oneor more strings. The strings have outlet openings throughwhich the water to be purified can be introduced into thereactor space at a plurality of spaced locations. The stringsare unbranched within the reactor, the ends of the stringsremote from the end of supply of the water to be purifiedto the influent distributing system are provided with open-able shut-off means, they are disposed outside the reactorspace and are closed during operation.According to the present invention, the directionof outflow of the water to be purified, defined by theoutlet openings, is obliquely downward.
