The machine comprises a flat bed supporting row of slidable needles having individual programme-controlled actuators, specifically linear DC motors or rotary motors reciprocating the needles via mechanism converting rotary motion to linear motion of the needles. At least one carriage having at least one yarn feeder is reciprocated along the bed, in synchronism with operations of the needles, pref. under programme control from data memory. Pref. yarn feeder carriages run along a rail which is the stator of a linear DC motor.
