In order to process friction pulley cable grooves it is known to use groove cutters which can be swivelled in manually from a stand-by position into the cable grooves. The depth of the engagement can be limited by limit stops. However, measures are necessary for monitoring the wear and personnel are necessary to carry out the recutting. The automatic recutting device 6 according to the invention engages with a sensing element 13 in the incoming cable groove 3 so that the adjacent cable grooves 4, 5 are correspondingly recut as a function of the position of the sensing element 13. An independent further sensing element also engages in the outgoing cable groove 5 which has already been recut and influences the cutter engaging in the incoming cable groove 3. The sensing elements 13 and cutters 15, 16 are permanently loaded in a resilient and elastic fashion in the direction of the axis 2 of the friction pulley. The sensing element 13 can be spring-loaded in relation to the cutters 15, 16 in order to permit the engagement of the cutters 15, 16 independently of the position of the sensing element 13 for the purpose of correcting eccentricities.
