In a cup-type tappet (10) in accordance with the invention, the contact phase (11), the shaft section (12), and the guide section (13) are made of three separate parts. These are dimensioned so that the guide section can be pushed through a hub (15) in the shaft section; its collar (14) comes to bear on the shaft section, while it bears on the underside of the contact phase, to which it is welded under pressure. This causes the three parts named to hold together firmly. All that remains to be done is to insert a piston or a clearance compensation element (16) into the guide section, and to fill it with oil. It is especially advantageous to use the contact phase consisting of an upper part plate (11.1) that has been hardened in a plasma-discharge hardening process, and a lower part plate (11.2) made of a low-carbon iron. A contact phase constructed thus can be used for the assembly described above after the two said part plates have been assembled without any further machining, in particular without grinding and polishing.
