The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the start-up of plants for the denitration of solids-laden flue gases, in particular of fossil-fuel-fired steam generators, by addition of ammonia upstream of catalysts arranged in the flue gas stream, which catalysts are bypassed by the flue gas stream when the denitration plant is idle. When the denitration plant is started up from the cold condition, the flue gases are passed over the catalysts and the catalysts are preheated with heated fresh air (hot air) until their temperature is above the water dew point of the flue gases, before the flue gases are passed over the catalysts for initiating the operation of the denitration plant. As a result, adhering deposits caused by condensation precipitate are avoided.
