In a method for examining waste water discharges into waste water channels and bodies of water for heavy metal content by analysis of the scum which forms in the waste water channel or body of water, to make possible a quantitatively sufficient scum formation even for smooth channel surfaces or high flow rates it is provided for the adhesion of the scum growth to be increased by use of a substrate.
