For different separation methods, two apparatuses are currently required, one for horizontal and one for vertical electrophoretic separation methods. When only one apparatus is used which fulfils these two objectives, one apparatus is thus saved. The novel gel electrophoresis apparatus is to be convenient to operate and to be universally usable for horizontal and also for vertical electrophoretic separations. A specially developed hinge which permits a buffer solution tank together with the separation chamber to be folded from the horizontal to the vertical and specially integrated electrodes for the two separation methods are the basis for an optional use of the novel gel electrophoresis apparatus for known and proven horizontal or vertical electrophoretic separation methods. The gel electrophoresis apparatus makes it possible to characterise macromolecules, in particular proteins and/or serum proteins by known electrophoretic methods which can be carried out horizontally or vertically, such as SDS-disc electrophoresis, gradient PAGE, isoelectric focussing, 2D-electrophoresis, in particular with polyacrylamide gels.
