PURPOSE:To obtain highly activated and highly selective catalysts with adequate strength and appropriate bulk specific gravity by using titanium hydride which produces titanium oxide with crystallites of less than a specific diameter as a titanium oxide source for catalysts for the manufacture of phthalic anhydride. CONSTITUTION:After mixing a titanium oxide source, a vanadium compound, an alkali metal compound and a sulfuric acid compound, the mixture is atomized, dried and baked to obtain catalysts for the manufacture of phthalic acid containing vanadium pentoxide, an alkali metal compound, sulfuric acid and titanium oxide. At that time, titanium hydride is used, as a titanium oxide source, which produces titanium oxide with a crystallite diameter of 300Angstrom or less. The catalyst thus obtained has ideal specific surface area and porous distribution, so that it is highly activated and also highly selective even at a low reactive temperature. In addition, the catalyst has high abrasion resistance, an appropriate bulk specific gravity and superior fluidity. Therefore, it produces phthalic anhydride at a high yield.
