A method for the detection of lymphoid leukaemia and/or lymphoma in a tissue sample comprises determination of homogeneity or heterogeneity of the length of immunoglobulin and/or T-receptor gene segments in the sample to indicate the presence or absence of monoclonality of the B- and/or T-lymphocyte population in the sample. The gene segment may be amplified, then size separated prior to length determination. A kit for performance of the method is also disclosed.
