New catalytic controlled degradation process of organic materials in products compatible with the environment comprising at least carbon dioxide. This process employs a solid catalyst comprising at least one transition element and a peroxide to form a reaction mixture with the organic material which degrades in the presence of photoenergy absorbable by the catalyst. This catalytic method has numerous applications, including purification of organic solvents; granular activated carbon regeneration; purification of drinking water and industrial wastewater, and disposal of hazardous organic substances and / or toxic in waste collected.
