CATALYTIC PROCESS FOR DEGRADATION OF ORGANIC MATERIALS IN AQUEOUS AND ORGANIC FLUIDS TO PRODUCE ENVIRONMENTALLY COMPATIBLE PRODUCTS

A novel catalytic process is provided for the controlleddegradation of organic materials into environmentally compatibleproducts comprising at least carbon dioxide. The processemploys a solid catalyst comprising at least one transitionelement and a peroxide to form a reaction mixture with theorganic material which is degraded in the presence ofphotoenergy absorbable by the catalyst. The catalytic processhas multiple applications including the purification of organicsolvents; the regeneration of granular activated carbon; thepurification of potable water and industrial waste water; andthe elimination of organic hazardous and/or toxic substancesfrom collected wastes.
