A method and an apparatus are described for puffing cut tobacco, in which a flow of carrier gas and tobacco ribs entrained thereby in a flow duct section are enveloped at one or more points by a hot gas flow which is separately conducted therein, accelerating the abovementioned mixed flow. Preferably, the acceleration takes place at a plurality of points arranged in succession.
