An apparatus for gel electrophoresis includes a gel carrier for a planar gel layer 14 having a translucent plate 18 on at least one side of the gel layer. The light beam 32 is conducted through the plate 18 in such a manner that the angle of incidence alpha of the light beam at the interface 50 between plate and gel layer is slightly less than or about equal to the limit angle of total reflection.
