A novel fuel element for a particle bed reactor comprises a fuel bed enclosed in the annular space between a fissile material -contg. porous external frit and a concentric porous internal frit. USE/ADVANTAGE - The fuel element is used esp. in gas cooled particle bed nuclear reactors. Fission heat causes expansion of the external frit to reduce any stresses produced by thermal expansion of the fuel bed.
