simple automatic portable system is used to measure the magnetic signature of a ship so as to be able to make compensatory adjustments of the degaussing system.one or more sets of magnetometers (12, 13) are placed at the bottom of the sea, and while the vessel (11), a straight course experienced over this area.data from the magnetometers are transmitted to a computer on board the vessel (11) where the data are processed (using a magnetic model to predict the magnetic field over an area greater than that covered by the automatic control system.the expected value of the magnetic field is then used to determine the optimal setting of the degaussing system to compensate for the magnetic signature of a ship.
