In an air-cooled generator, in particular a high-speed AC generator for vehicles, the main flow of the cooling air is sucked out through the intermediate spaces of the magnet poles on the outer circumference of the rotor. The rotor rotates at high speeds past webs between cooling air perforations in a bearing plate of the generator housing, as a result of which, air currents which impinge on the webs from the intermediate spaces or cooling channels cause a cooling air flow which flows in a highly turbulent manner towards the fan wheel arranged on the exterior, resulting in increased noise. In order to reduce the noise it is proposed that a smoothing zone (16) for the cooling air be arranged between the bearing plate and a cooling air inlet region of the fan wheel. This measure considerably reduces the flow noise.
