An apparatus (Fig. 1, element 10) for automatically measuring characteristics, such as capacitance, dissipation factor and insulation resistance of each capacitor of a plurality of capacitors includes a predetermined number of control terminals (38-1 38-N) capable of receiving each one of the capacitors that is to be controlled, and a plurality of measuring devices (20, 22 and 24) of different parameters. A relay matrix (66) comprises a plurality of relays connected so that each control connection can be connected to one of the measuring devices and to a high voltage source (12) of electrical potential. The control device further comprises a network (30) for exciting a predetermined sequence in order to connect the capacitor associated with each relay to the desired measuring devices and controlling the output of the voltage source so that celle- applies a predetermined high voltage to each capacitor connected to the source when a relay is energized. A recording device (26R) associated with the measuring device records the measured values of the capacitors. In the preferred embodiment, the network (30), the control unit (26) and the recording device (26R) are operated by means of a digital computer (not shown) which operates according to a program.
