The system modifies the specified chartacterisations for each working point when engine knocking is detected by a modification figure so that the short-term regulation for each working point refers to a new ignition point specification (specified characteristics plus modification figure). Within a given repetitive observation interval, the modification figure is determined depending on whether or not knocking is detected. The modification figure is determined by measuring control excursions from short-term control and normalising these excursions so that they are independent of angular speed and load.
