This study analyzes the knock signals based on the maximum magnitude, peak to peak, root mean square, time of occurrences and duration of the knock signals. The purpose of the study is to find out the best method to measure the knock intensity of a gasoline engine and how to measure the intensity without errors. The knock signals were taken by using an accelerometer and a data acquisition system from an 1800 cc engine. Hundreds of knock signals were taken in different engine conditions. These signals were then selected to be analyzed statistically and were correlated. The maximums, peak to peaks, root mean squares and duration of the signals are extremely useful in determining the definition of knock intensity for a knock control system. Meanwhile, the time of occurrences of the start, the end and the maximum value of the knock signals are useful for windowing the knock signal in order to obtain a low noise knock control system. At the end, a simple chaotic analysis of the knock intensity data is presented.
