The coupling has two laminate sections, the outer laminates (9) are fixed to the housing (2) and the inner laminates (10) are fixed to the hub (3,3a). According to the direction of rotation a number of the inner laminates do not have a drive connection. The coupling hub is split such that the first coupling hub section (3) is located on an inner shaft (5) and is prevented from rotating. The second hub section (3a) mounted on the inner shaft is allowed to rotate freely. The first hub section connects with the second hub section via a splined axial sliding sleeve valve (4), operating the second hub section according to the direction of shaft rotation. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simple design of viscous coupling is capable of transmitting variable torque in both directions; long term efficiency is independent of operating fluid.
