Membrane microfilters (I) are used for the treatment of liq. and/or gaseous media (II). (I) consist of particles, chips, fibres or fibrous structures obtd. by breaking up the off-cut material which arises in the prodn. of membrane microfilters. The particles (I) are produced by a normal method for the prodn. of membrane microfilters, modified to prevent formation of strips; mixts. of particles of different membrane microfilters can be used; (II) is passed through a vessel contg. (I), which are pref. in the form of moulded bodies produced from the particles; the particles consist of natural or synthetic, possibly modified, polymers; (II) are treated to remove dissolved or suspended materials. USE/ADVANTAGE - W.r.t. bulk (not disintegrated) membrane microfilters, (I) have a larger contact surface which depends on the degree of size redn.; used in modular form without regard to their shrinkage or swelling properties, regenerated (and topped up) in situ or outside the treatment vessel (e.g., by dissoln. and re-pptn.), and present no problems of waste disposal.
