A moving stairway escape-way from offshore platforms, comprises two pairs of parallel cables (2a, 2b) each passing through the ends of a respective set of equally spaced bars (3) such that some bars belonging to the first pair of steel cables lie substantially coaxial with bars belonging to the second pair of cables and are connected thereto by means of equally spaced apart pairs of non-skid rungs (4a, 4b), said space between said pairs of rungs being about the same as the average height of an escaper likely to tread on them, the bars 3 engaging a pair of coaxial pulleys 5 constrained against rotation relative to each other, but allowed controlled conjoint rotation. The pulleys turn freely under the weight of a person on the stairway, but are braked to a maximum speed of descent. IMAGE
