PURPOSE:To prevent change of the steering force on the basis of switchover of the motor characteristic or switchover of an electromagnetic clutch in a part time electric power steering device for setting a certain speed range as an assist steering range by a motor, and switching for control abutment of the motor current against the steering torque within that range to multiple stages in response to the speed, and tuning the electromagnetic clutch off to change the steering into the manual steering in a range exceeding the described speed range. CONSTITUTION:At a speed that requires abutment of the motor current and switchover of an electromagnetic clutch, a judgement that the steering torque T is less than a set value T0 (for example, 0.4 kg fm) or not is performed, and in the case of TT0, the described switchover is performed, and in the case of T= T0, the described switchover is stopped temporarily, and switchover is performed at the time that T T0.
