PURPOSE:To improve processing ability of a device so as to accurately align a medium to a predetermined position by detecting a skew amount and a shift amount of the medium, sideward moving the medium to correct its attitude in the case of at least one of the skew/shift amounts exceeding a permissible value, positioning the medium to a predetermined position and sideward moving the medium only when necessary. CONSTITUTION:A document 1a is conveyed in a direction A by conveying rollers 2a, and a skew amount of the document is detected by a pair of skew amount detecting sensors 4a, 4b arranged with a fixed space in a vertical direction to a conveying direction. Since a point end part of the document 1a is detected by the sensors 4a, 4b, this detection is easily obtained from a time difference and a conveying speed of the document 1a. Next, in the case of the skew amount within a permissible value, a shift amount of the document 1a is detected and judged for whether the shift amount is within a permissible value or not by a shift amount detecting sensor 5a arranged in the vicinity of a reference guide 7 for conveying the document 1a. Then, in the case of one or both of the skew and shift amounts out of the permissible value, after the document 1a is conveyed to a position 1b, a motor is stopped, and the document is sideward moved in a direction of the guide 7 by a sideward moving roller 6.
