PURPOSE:To facilitate the preparation and handling of an adsorbing film and to detect a smell substance of a certain kind with high sensitivity by using a certain kind of the polymer film applied to the electrode of a quartz oscillator as the adsorbing film of the smell substance. CONSTITUTION:A polymer film coated quartz oscillator is constituted of a quartz plate, the electrode vapor-deposited on the quartz plate and the adsorbing film cast on the electrode on the single surface or both surfaces of the quartz plate and the adsorbing film is composed of a polymer film selectively adsorbing a smell substance. The smell substance is quantified by a method wherein the smell substance is adsorbed on the polymer film coated quartz oscillator to measure the change quantity of frequency before and after the adsorption of the smell substance and the adsorbing amount of the smell substance in definite proportional relation (determined by the material quality and size of the electrode) to the change quantity of frequency is calculated and the concn. of the smell substance in definite proportional relation to the concn. of the adsorbing quantity to the quantity of the adsorbing film is calculated. As one embodiment of the polymer film, a polystyrene film selectively adsorbing the styrene gas being the smell substance in a gaseous phase is designated and formed by casting an aqueous solution or org. solvent solution of polystyrene on the electrode.
