The invention relates to an apparatus for cutting a relatively rigid material binding wire or band (12) wrapped around bales or packages (13) and for removing a cut-off wire or band. The apparatus comprises: a cutting device (1), including cutting means (6) and guide means (5, 7, 7a) for passing a wire or a band (12) to the cutting means; and a removing device (2) for cut-off wire or band (12), located opposite to cutting device (1) and including collecting and disposing means (8) for cut-off wire or band (12).
