A monolithic front surface mirror comprising a substrate (12), a metal layer (18), a first dielectric layer (20) and a second dielectric layer (22). In one preferred embodiment, a metal film is deposited onto a substrate and thereafter a low refractive index dielectric layer is deposited onto the metal layer followed by a high refractive index dielectric layer. A final protective dielectric layer may be deposited to increase overall durability. The metal, dielectric and protective layers of the front surface mirror are preferably deposited by a sputtering process using a rotating cylindrical magnetron.
