High temperature oil resistant elastomers are prepared from copolymers of butadiene alkenylpyridine, copolymers of butadiene acrylate and copolymers of butadiene with fluorine-containing 1,3-dienes. The unsaturated olefinic structure and the current unsaturation derived from the hydrocarbon diene of each of the copolymers are hydrogenated to a high degree by a catalyst which improves the thermal resistance of the copolymer without hydrogenation of these polar groups, which would lower the resistance to oil. of the copolymer. A complexing agent for the hydrogenation catalyst prevents poisoning of the catalyst by the polar groups of the copolymers thus allowing the catalysts to form a complex with the unsaturated sites along the backbone of the olefinic copolymer to achieve high levels of hydrogenation.
