This is a process for producing a powdery complex oxide useful for producing ferrite contg. both an iron oxide and a zinc oxide. The process comprises (1) spraying an aq. soln. contg. chlorides into a fluidised roasting furnace to cause thermal decompsn., (2) extracting the produced oxide particles and a decompsn. gas through the upper part of the roasting furnace, and (3) collecting the oxide particles using a dust collector. The aq. soln. contains iron chlorides and zinc chlorides and opt. manganese chlorides, nickel chlorides or magnesium chlorides. The temp. of the fluidised roasting furnace is 600 deg.C or higher, but lower than the b.pt. of the zinc chlorides, that is 800 deg.C or lower. The decompsn. gas exiting from the furnace, after sepg. from the extracted oxide particles, contacts and concentrates with its heat the incoming aq. chlorides soln. and also transfers to this soln. uncollected oxide particles or unreacted metal chloride, thereby increasing the efficiency of the reaction. The aq. chlorides soln. can be obtd. by adding the necessary metal or metal oxides into a waste soln. of chloric acid washing soln. for iron-steel.
