A hard metal forming finger (12) compresses the tobacco or filter tips to the required shape. The finger is attached to the underside of a rigid plate (14) with a passage-way (19) for gas from a pressure source (17). The gas flows through an orifice (19) with a downstream pressure controlled by a pressure gauge (P), so that the volumetric flow is kept constant. A blind hole (22) in the plate receives a thermometer which measures the temp. rise in the tobacco due to friction with the form finger.
