Temperature-controlled oven for optical-cable colour-coding - uses hot-air blown down cable-axis in continuous process

Optical cable is wound from a drum and tension-controlling pulleys to a colour-coding or labelling device and on to a drying oven (7) through which it is wound on to a take-up spool. The drying oven comprises a long metallic case (9) and inner tube (10) with a layer of thermal insulation (11), e.g. glass fibres, between. It is closed at the ends (12) except for small ports for the cable and for hot air which is blown through a sealed side entrance into the tube centre. The inner temperature is maintained at 200 degrees C. with not more than 60 degrees C. at the outer-case. Improved access can be obtained with a hinged section in the case. ADVANTAGE - Improved control of cable temperature and tension and faster throughput.
