Polyhydroxyalkanamino -bis(methylenephosphonic acids) and their salts, of formula (I) R(CHOH)nCH2N(CH2PO3M2)2 are claimed. Where M = H, alkali metal, NH4 or tetraalkylammonium; R = H or 1-3C alkyl; n = 2-6. USE/ADVANTAGE - Use of (I) as complex-formers with threshold activity is claimed. (I) are also sequestering agents. Applns. are prevention of scale, e.g. in machine cleaning and washing plant (e.g. bottle cleaning), in steam prodn., in treating cooling water, in recovering petroleum, and in coal mining. Only small amt. of (I) are needed, giving protection of the environment. (5pp Dwg.No.0/0)
