The element e.g. a diskette (1) or cassette, has an interface and a further element (2) connected to it either directly or via a cable or able to communicate with it via radio (8), infrared or microwave. The second element contains a keyboard (3), display (4), read/write device (5) for chip cards (6) and possibly batteries. The element can have a modem and a cable connected directly to the modem or to the processor enabling data communications with external devices such as magnetic tape stations, LANs, speech output devices or the further element. ADVANTAGE - Overcomes disadvantages of state of art, including high cost and low data rates.
