The end of the tandem brake cylinder (80) has a two part modulating cylinder (51) with its outer part (9) forming a piston insert into the tandem cylinder and with its inner part (49) operated by the main brake linkage through the servo cylinder. In the brake modulating phase the modulating cylinder moves to open control ducts for the fluid return. The layout of the modulating cylinder is such that the operation of the main seals are checked by the movement of the cylinders during the modulating phase. The modulating cylinder forms one end of the pressure chamber at the end of the tandem cylinder. ADVANTAGE - Simplified lay-out, fail-safe operation.
