In the surface-finishing of metallic materials by forming a surface layer of upto 3mm thick using a laser beam in an alloying process, the novelty is that a high-alloyed, amorphous metal foil, whose alloy content is determined by the degree of mixing with the base material, is used in the alloying process. The metal foil specifically comprises Co, Ni or Fe having a high content of glass-, carbide-, or boride-formers. The glass-formers used are C, B or Si and Cr, W or Mo are used as carbide- and/or boride-formers. Several amorphous metal foils of the same or different chemical compsn. are used simultaneously in the alloying process. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is used in welding and is an uncomplicated one-step process.
