An automatic process is used to establish a wiring route between a start component (S) and a target component (T). The system is used to establish connections on circuit boards. A critical region (CA) is defined in relation to the components and defines a region in which possible connections may be made without a blockage occuring. Start and finish islands (IS, IT) are defined and all sites are examined to determine if blocking points (ISBP, ISBT) exist. For each valid connection, the point must lie in the critical region and can be reached from both sides of the island. ADVANTAGE - Provides structured solution for establishing connections.
