The central pillar is for a vehicle chassis, esp. a chassis with a bearer structure of light alloy extrusions and cast node elements. It is constructed at least partially of light alloy hollow extrusions and/or cast components. A multi-cavity hollow extrusion maybe used with a wide base wall, curved by bending. The tapered elevation is produced by cutting the hollow section stepwise in height and shaping the base wall. Spaces for attachement of door hinges and lock posts are provided by cut-outs in the section. Door sealing flanges are incorporated each side. Other variants propose a combination of extruded sections with pressed or cast parts. USE/ADVANTAGE - Central pillar in car body provides rigidity against side impact and is cheap to mfr. in low volume prodn,. due to low investment requirement for tooling.
