The electrical drive for a web winder (AUF), esp. for a paper web (VB), with a tensile shearing unit (BT) with at least one shearing roller (SW) for the material (VB) to be wound and at least one winder (ZW) and especially a central winder, has a monitor (KM) to measure the actual value (FM) of the reactive pulling components (FB) against the direction (v) of movement, within the material (VB) to be wound, outside of and ahead of the winder (AUF). A DC drive (GA) applies the first active pulling component (FT) in the direction (v) of material (VB) travel, with rotary speed control, and a further rotary speed controlled DC drive (DA) applies a further pulling component (FZ) on the mateiral (VB) in the direction (v) of travel. A computerised control (SPS) gives the measured value for the armature current (IA) for the DC drive (GA) for the severing unit (BT) to give the first active pulling component (FT) expressed as FT = K X IA (where K is an amplifying factor). It also forms the second active pulling component (FZ) to give FZ = FB - FT from the measured value (FM = FB) for the reactive pulling component (FB) and the actual value of the first active pulling component (FT). ADVANTAGE - The system gives a consistently hard-wound roll of paper, without the need for further mechanical systems between the paper cutter and the winder.
