P An electron gun is modulated by an optoelectronic switching device. The switching device comprises a modulated light source and at least a solid-state optoelectronic switch, AsGa or Si, this switch being isolator in the absence of illumination, and conducting when illuminated by the light source modulated; the device also comprises means for conveying light from the source to the switch (s). According to one characteristic, the modulated light source is a laser; according to another characteristic, the source is a continuous source with external mechanical or electro-optical modulation. According to one characteristic, the optoelectronic switching device is placed between a high voltage source and the cathode of an electron gun, thus providing modulation of the cathode.
