PURPOSE: To measure oscillation of a gyro pendulum in a short time without damping the oscillation by detecting the deviation angle of the gyro pendulum or the like through an optoelectronic measuring unit and calculating the oscillation through a central processor. ;CONSTITUTION: The gyro 16 of a gyro pendulum 15 locked through a lock ring 23 or the like is fed with power until a desired r.p.m. is reached. The gyro pendulum 15 is unlocked by throwing in a motor 29 and current supply to the gyro 16 is interrupted simultaneously. But a rotation sustaining current is fed through a metal band 34 and a machine casing 2 follows up the rotational position of the pendulum 15 through a rotary motor 6 under control of a central processor 39. The motor 6 sustains the operational connected state until the optical indicator of an auto-collimator 21 having a CCD sensor 22 arrives at a central position thus sustaining the undamped rotary oscillating state of the pendulum 15. Subsequently, deviation angle and the like are detected at a short time interval and the processor 39 calculates the mean deviation angle and the like according to a specified formula and then calculates the deviation of magnetic north.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
