PURPOSE: To quickly find out a character to be read which is printed on a label. ;CONSTITUTION: A first distinguishable object and a second distinguishable object are searched in first and second search windows 21 and 22 to determine the reference points on a label in respective windows. When characters, a bar code, or the like printed in a prescribed position on the label 10 will be read, the accurate position of characters, the bar code, or the like can be forecasted by these two reference points. A character search window 10 put on each character in the estimated position is searched to read the character. If first and second objects cannot be found because the label is torn, an alternate object is searched, and the position of a reference point can be set on it.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
