PURPOSE: To obtain the captioned derivative from which the captioned contact lens possessing excellent oxygen permeability, wettability, and mechanical strength is obtained, by copolymerizing a specified hydroxyethyl cellulose derivative with a vinylic monomer. ;CONSTITUTION: (A) A hydroxyethyl cellulose derivative wherein the value of the degree of substitution (D.S.) is 0.5 to 3.0, the value of the molar substitution (M.S.) is 1.5 to 3.0, the weight-average molecular weight is 10,000 or more, and repeating structural units represented by formula I [wherein one or more urethane linkages are contained, a+b+c+d+e+f≥3; R¹ and R² each represent 2-8C alkylene, 6-12C arylene or the like; n is 0 or 1; A¹ represents a group represented by formula II or III (wherein R' represents H or a lower alkyl); A represents O, NH or a group represented by formula IV (wherein R" represents H or a lower alkyl group); R³ represents C or CH₃, and R⁴ represents H] are contained in an amount of about 0.5 to 90% based on the total number of hydroxyl groups of the hydroxyethyl cellulose and (B) a vinylic monomer are copolymerized to obtain a highly wettable polymer insoluble in organic aprotic solvents so that the repeating units of B may be 0.01 to 80 per repeating unit of A.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
