Compounds having the formula (II Het-S-CH2-Y-CH2-O-R (II where: Het = 4,5-diphenylimidazole-2-yl; Y = -CO-; -CHOH-; -(CH2)n- where On10; or -C=N-R2 where R2 =OH, alkoxy (C1-C10), omega-hydroxy alkoxy (C1-C10), or -NHCONH2; R = phenyl substituted in the para-position with a carboxyl or alkoxycarbonyl (C1-C20) group where the alkoxy can be linear or branched, which are novel except when Y is -CHOH-, have ACAT inhibiting activity and therefore have hypolipidaemic, antiatherosclerotic and anti-atheromasic plaque action.
