A process for removing inorganic gels and dispersed particulate incompressible solids from an aqueous slurry having a pH of about -2 to +3 and a soluble metal chloride content of about 3 to 50 percent by weight, based on total weight of the liquid mud. This process consists in: (a) rapidly bringing the liquid slurry into very good contact with an effective quantity of a cationic Mannich polyacrylamide having an average molecular weight of approximately 4-15 million until the quantity of gel and desired particulate solids is flocculated, (b) slowly and gently mixing the product of step (a) until the flocculation of the desired size is obtained, and (c) eliminating the flocculation of the product of step (a) .
