A method and circuit to detect by means of measurement signals, without sensors, the angular position of a synchronous machine (1, 31, 61, 81) preferably excited by a permanent magnet, driven by a converter (3, 33, 63, 83). Is used as the voltage jumps of the measuring signals generated by the power converter (3, 33, 63, 83) and the measurement data obtained are transmitted to a computer which calculates the rotor position as a function of the reactance of the stator . When starting the synchronous machine, a pre-magnetization is adjusted and a measurement is performed for the attenuation and the strengthening field. The advantages of the invention are, firstly, high accuracy, and secondly the fact that no additional analog current source is required to determine the position of the pole wheel. In addition, the position of the pole piece may be determined under any load.
